Archived HPWREN data (more than 24 hours old) is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. HPWREN data includes camera imagery, the Fire Ignition images Library (FIgLib), and meteorological and other sensor data. It is copyright © The Regents of the University of California.

For non-commercial purposes, you may copy, redistribute and adapt the data, provided you credit HPWREN as described under Attribution. Non-commercial purposes include research, teaching, and training or evaluating machine-learning models.

Real-time data

Real-time data is HPWREN data less than 24 hours old. It includes live camera images, live sensor streams, and automated retrieval of new data as it is collected. Data more than 24 hours old is archived data.

Any use of real-time data, commercial or non-commercial, requires a license from the UC San Diego Office of Innovation and Commercialization. HPWREN may waive this requirement for academic research and teaching; to request a waiver, email feedback. The CC BY-NC license and the no-fee Commercial Use Permission below cover archived data only, including FIgLib.

Commercial Use

1. Register. Before use, email fback@hpwren.ucsd.edu with
   • your organization's name and a contact person
   • a short description of the product
   • the HPWREN datasets you intend to use
2. Attribute. Credit HPWREN as described under Attribution. This applies to product documentation, publications, and any marketing that describes capabilities developed with HPWREN data.
3. Share back. Within 12 months of first use, or at product launch if that comes sooner, send HPWREN a short article (about 500–1,500 words). It should describe how you used HPWREN data and what you learned, and HPWREN may publish it on its website. Sharing evaluation results is welcome but not required.
4. Do not redistribute the data.The permission covers your own use of the data, including training, evaluating and validating models. You may not resell, sublicense or redistribute HPWREN data, or substantial portions of it, as a dataset; direct others to HPWREN instead. Models you train are yours. You may show a small number of example images in publications and documentation, with credit.
5. No endorsement. Do not state or imply that HPWREN or UC San Diego endorses your product.
6. Revisit at scale. You agree to contact the UC San Diego Office of Innovation and Commercialization. to discuss in good faith a license that reflects that success if either of these happens:
   • annual revenue from a product incorporating models or methods developed with HPWREN data exceeds $100,000
   • your organization is acquired

This permission is non-exclusive and non-transferable. It may be withdrawn if these conditions are not met. Organizations that need a formal signed license may contact OIC directly.
